A memorial for Seema Banu and her children… Neighbours started fundraising

Dublin: Seema Banu, whose husband’s brutality took her life, bows before Ireland’s love for her children. The response to a neighbour-led fund-raising programme to erect a grave for the dead demonstrates the nation’s love.

Vivienne Bwalya, a neighbour of Seema’s in Rathfarnham, set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for the tomb. According to the young housewife who is organising the fundraiser, Seema Banu loved the children in the neighbourhood as if they were her own. All three are laid to rest at Sill Cemetery. Seema’s family in India could not visit here.

Seema and her children Asfira (11) and Faizan (6) were strangled to death by her husband, Sameer Syed, in October 2020 at their home in Rathfarnham, Dublin. Sameer was not arrested for weeks after the murder, so the bodies had to be buried in Dublin against the wishes of Seema’s family.

Early last month, Seema’s relatives, Kashif Ahmed and Suhan Syed, visited the grave to offer prayers and flowers. The neighbour was informed about the tombstone installation at that time. Kashif and Vivienne came to give evidence at the inquest of Seema, Asfira, and Faizan at Dublin District Coroner’s Court.

I was thinking about the grave. But he couldn’t do it alone. I’m delighted to help make it happen. Kashif thanked everyone for their kind donations.

The family has requested that a suitable tomb be built for Seema, Asfira, and Faizan. Those who can, please help – Vivienne Bwalya appeals.

Sameer Syed committed suicide in Midlands Prison while awaiting trial last year. Despite admitting to killing his wife, he denied killing the children, but the jury was eventually convinced that his statement was a lie.
