COVID-19: Luxembourg PM Xavier Bettel in hospital

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has been hospitalised with COVID-19 infection.  Bettel, 48, developed the infection a week ago and was taken in for 24 hours of testing and medical analysis on Sunday. The government said his condition is “serious but stable”, and he will need to be in the hospital for up to three days more.

Bettel was diagnosed with low oxygen saturation and has been under medical observation since the weekend. He also has other coronavirus symptoms including coughing, headaches and a fever.

Bettel revealed his positive test shortly after returning from a European Union summit. He received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in May and was scheduled to receive his second AstraZeneca jab on July 1, but he became infected before that.

In the meantime, Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna will take over the running of state affairs, but Bettel will continue to coordinate some work remotely.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wished him “a very speedy recovery” on twitter.

Organisers of the EU summit said that all precautionary measures were strictly followed during the two-day conference. So far, no other EU leader has tested positive for coronavirus.
