Dubai tightens restrictions following spike in coronavirus cases

Dubai has decided to tighten restrictions until the end of this month as part of efforts to stem the rise in COVID-19 cases. Authorities have stated that a set of measures taken in response to growing violations of the COVID preventive measures will come into effect from today.

Dubai has taken a different approach, while most other countries have shut down all sectors to fight COVID-19. Dubai failed to counter the rise in COVID cases after it branded itself as an open, sunny and quarantine-free winter escape. Tourists and influencers flocked to the emirate during the holidays, as tourism reopened here in July.

Bars and pubs in Dubai will remain closed until the end of this month. The capacity of indoor venues, including cinemas and sports venues, will be halved. Shopping malls, hotels, swimming pools and private beaches can only operate at 70% capacity. Restaurants and cafes must close by 1 am.

The Crisis and Disaster Management Committee has said it will impose fines on anyone found to be at risk to public health if it deliberately ignores preventive measures or does not properly monitor them.

A large number of people had come to Dubai to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. However, in recent weeks, the guidelines have gradually been tightened up. Restrictions were imposed on the entertainment sector and non-essential surgery in hospitals was suspended.

Seven emirates, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have reported more than three lakh cases and 859 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

At the same time, the UAE is preparing to administer some 3.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to its population of about 10 million – the second fastest delivery after Israel.
