Dublin: Brazilian ‘Hero’ Caio Benicio, renowned for his courageous intervention during the Parnell Square riots in Dublin, has announced his candidacy for Fianna Fáil. Benicio aims to secure a seat in the North Inner City Ward of Dublin, leveraging his commitment to community service as a Deliveroo driver and his notable act of bravery.

On November 23, while cycling through Parnell Square East, Benicio witnessed a man assaulting a young girl. Reacting swiftly, he intervened, using his helmet to thwart the attacker’s actions. This selfless act propelled Benicio into the spotlight, earning him widespread acclaim and recognition.

In response to his valor, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to honor Benicio’s bravery and raise funds for him. The overwhelming support has seen over €370,000 donated, affirming the public’s admiration for his heroism.

Inspired by a desire to effect positive change within his community, the 43-year-old has embraced the political arena as a means to amplify his impact. Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin expressed confidence in Benicio’s potential as a representative, endorsing his candidacy as a testament to his dedication to serving the people.

The forthcoming local council elections, scheduled for June 7, mark a pivotal opportunity for citizens to shape the future of their communities. Eligible voters, including residents of Ireland and EU member states, must ensure they are registered on the electoral roll at least 15 days prior to the election.

These elections, occurring every five years, hold significant implications for local governance and representation. Notably, voters will have the opportunity to directly elect the mayor of Limerick City for the first time, reflecting evolving democratic processes.

Registration on the electoral roll can be completed online via the Check the Register website or specific portals for Dublin residents. Upon registration, voters will receive a polling card by post, detailing their elector number and assigned polling station. Identification will be required to cast votes at the designated polling station.
