Imam’s supporters showed their strength in Tallaght; Calls for Increased Security at Irish Muslim Mosques

Dublin: In the aftermath of the recent attack in Tallaght, Chief Imam Dr. Umar Al Qadri has called for enhanced security measures to safeguard Muslim mosques and institutions across Ireland. Speaking on RTE Radio’s News at One, Dr. Al Qadri emphasised the importance of strengthening security protocols and urged all religious leaders and imams in Ireland to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, such as avoiding travelling alone and increasing security at places of worship.

While acknowledging Ireland’s unique character, Dr. Al Qadri highlighted the presence of hatred within society and stressed the need for heightened security measures to protect the community from potential threats.
Describing the attack on him as a premeditated act, Dr. Al Qadri emphasised that it was not a mere robbery but a targeted assault on a community leader. He underscored the significance of conducting a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and their motives.

Despite initial doubts expressed by the Garda regarding the nature of the attack, Dr. Al Qadri asserted that it was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of rising anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiments. He expressed gratitude for the support and assistance received during this challenging time and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering mutual understanding and harmony within the community.

The attack, which occurred on February 15 during a discussion about a marriage arrangement, left Dr. Al Qadri with injuries, including facial trauma and broken teeth. While unable to attend a subsequent protest event organised in his support, his message was conveyed by Dublin South-West TD Dr. Paul Murphy, who condemned the attack as a racist act and emphasised the solidarity of the local community against aggression and sectarianism. Dr. Al Qadri expressed his willingness to engage with the attackers and work towards reconciliation and understanding.
