Incidents of resident deaths due to negligence of nursing home staff during COVID: Investigation continues……

DUBLIN: Investigations Intensify into Nursing Home Negligence Deaths During the COVID-19 Pandemic

An ongoing inquiry into fatalities resulting from alleged negligence by nursing home personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic has gained momentum. Approximately 30 nursing homes are facing formal complaints related to cases of profoundly negligent deaths.

During the initial two years of the pandemic, nursing homes and residential facilities accounted for a staggering one-third of all COVID-19-related fatalities. Presently, law enforcement agencies are scrutinising approximately 60 cases, with statements already obtained from several staff members as part of the investigative process.

The first case, poised to potentially enter the courtroom soon, carries significant implications for the progression of similar criminal complaints lodged by families who lost loved ones in care facilities during the pandemic.

Prosecutors bear the burden of demonstrating both the occurrence of negligent treatment and the existence of a clear and severe risk associated with this high level of negligence. Individual penalties may entail life imprisonment or unrestricted fines, while nursing homes themselves may also face charges.
