Dublin: Experts assert that the possibility of a decrease in petrol and diesel prices in Ireland remains remote. While recent global events such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Hamas tensions may not have a direct impact on Ireland, they are expected to influence fuel prices due to their repercussions on the oil market.
Despite Ireland’s lack of direct oil imports, developments in the Middle East have placed considerable strain on the country’s oil market and pricing. Experts emphasise that any potential energy crisis in the future can only be navigated through conscientious reductions in fuel consumption, leveraging domestic fuel sources, and embracing alternative energy methods. They stress that reducing vehicle usage, practicing energy conservation in daily activities, and curtailing imports are essential steps towards mitigating energy costs.
The recent Houthis interventions in the Red Sea, particularly the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical route for global oil trade, further exacerbate concerns for Ireland’s oil supply. With approximately six million barrels of oil traversing this strait daily to reach Europe, America, and Asia, countries like the UK, EU members, the US, and Ireland are inevitably impacted by such disruptions.
Ireland’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels underscores its vulnerability within the European energy landscape. With a mere 90-day oil reserve, prolonged disruptions could plunge the nation into a crisis. Moreover, Ireland’s failure to exploit its offshore oil resources exacerbates its energy dependency.
The country’s complete reliance on imported oil, which fulfils half of its energy requirements, with fossil fuels meeting 85% of its needs, highlights the urgent need for diversification and energy security measures. A significant portion of imported oil is used for heating over 700,000 homes in Ireland.
The availability of refining facilities, conversion of oil into petrol and diesel, and stock levels further contribute to price fluctuations. Additionally, the manner in which fuel is utilised, particularly in transportation, plays a pivotal role.
Irish citizens collectively travelled over 30 billion kilometres by car last year, underscoring the imperative for reducing automobile reliance to bolster energy security and diminish oil imports. Experts advocate for the development of infrastructure conducive to reducing oil demand, including dedicated bus corridors, light rail systems, bicycle lanes, and shared mobility solutions. While alternative technologies like electric vehicles and electric heating are promising, their widespread adoption necessitates significant time and investment.
