Ireland has become a stronghold for the dangerous Black Axe gang

More than a third of the arrests in a worldwide crackdown on the notorious Black Axe crime gang were in Ireland. Interpol chiefs have announced that Operation Jackal, which involved law enforcement from Argentina to Malaysia, culminated in May by targeting the West African gang. A total of €2.5 million has been frozen or confiscated; 103 persons have been detained; 1,110 suspects have been identified; and 208 bank accounts have been suspended.

Several kingpins have been caught, and their criminal networks are considered a significant worldwide security concern. And 34 of the arrests occurred in Ireland, with 12 held for investigation purposes and 22 arrested for alleged money laundering and gangland-style offences.

The counties of Dublin, Clare, Laois, Meath, Limerick, Cork, and Waterford were searched, and arrests were carried out.

Beyond Irish boundaries, Operation Jackal recovered €225,655 in five criminal cases involving Irish corporations. Gardaí, on the other hand, think the gang has laundered up to €64 million via Ireland in recent years. Officers claim to have identified 800 so-called money mules in this area, but estimate the true figure is 4,000.
