Irish drug mafia boss Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch arrested in Spain

Spanish police have arrested Irish drug mafia boss Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch in connection with the attack on a Regency hotel and the murder of Kinahan gang member David Byrne. A European Arrest warrant had been issued for Gerry Hutch (58) in April.

He is said to have been arrested by police in the holiday resort of Fuengirola yesterday. Hutch’s detention and interrogation are expected to be a major turning point in the investigation.

Four months ago, police forces all around Europe were requested to assist in the hunt for Hutch as part of the garda investigation.

The shocking mafia killing at the Regency Hotel took place in February 2016.

A five-man squad, including three men dressed as ERU officers, arrived with AK-47 rifles and shot Kinahan gang member David Byrne. The Regency attack shook Ireland’s political and policing system.

The attack also led to the Kinahan-Hutch riots, a series of brutal attacks and 18 murders.

Gardai believe the Regency attack was planned in revenge for the murder of Hutch’s nephew, Gary, by the Kinahan group in September 2015. Three months later, an attempt was made to assassinate Gerry Hutch in Lanzarote. The incident also led to the murders of Hutch’s brother, Eddie, three of his nephews and two of his best friends.

Gerry is the head of one of Ireland’s two most notorious gangs and is widely regarded as the cause of many crimes in the country as well as the guardian of many young criminals.

He is the mastermind of two of the largest armed robberies in Irish history. After his release from prison in 1985, he was known to be leading a “disciplined, monastic lifestyle”, and Veronica Gerin, an investigative journalist who was assassinated in 1996, nicknamed him “The Monk.”

The case against Hutch was investigated by a Ballymun-based detective team. They had handed over the investigation file to the DPP late last year. He is also known to have various charges against him, including attempted murder and possession of a firearm.
