Irish Government Recalls Nearly 13,000 Passports Over Printing Error

Dublin: The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent recall of 12,904 Irish passports after a printing error rendered them non-compliant with international travelstandards.

The passports affected were issued between 23 December 2025 and 6 January 2026. The error, caused by a software update, resulted in the omission of the “IRL” country code on the passport data page.

The Department warned that holders of these passports may encounter difficulties at airport e-gates and immigration checkpoints, and apologised on behalf of the Passport Service for the disruption.

Members of the public who received passports during the affected period are advised to check the date of issue and data page. Those who hold impacted documents must return both the passport and the associated passport card to:

Replacement passports will be issued within 10 days, the Department confirmed. Officials stressed that no new passport application is required.
