Dublin: Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has intensified efforts to fast-track the launch of direct flight services between Ireland and India during his ongoing visit to New Delhi as part of the EU–India trade mission.
During the visit, the minister held high-level discussions with senior management from Air India and IndiGo to explore the introduction of direct routes connecting the two countries. While regulatory and operational procedures may take up to two years to complete, both airlines have reportedly expressed willingness to commence services at the earliest possible opportunity.
Minister Chambers emphasised that establishing a direct air link would deliver significant economic and social benefits. Enhanced connectivity is expected to strengthen trade and investment ties, expand tourism opportunities, and provide improved travel options for the tens of thousands of people of Indian origin living in Ireland.
The Minister is accompanied by representatives from Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland. The visit marks the first Irish trade mission to India following the recently agreed EU–India Free Trade Agreement.
Earlier this week, reports also indicated that the Lufthansa Group and Air India are preparing to significantly expand their strategic partnership in the context of strengthening EU–India aviation and trade links.
