Leaving Certificate: Government to consider strict action against those who improperly influence teachers

DUBLIN: Anyone who attempts to improperly influence to get a higher grade for the Leaving Certificate course will face sanctions. The government is considering stricter measures, including withholding the results of those who attempt to inappropriately influence the Leaving Certificate grading process.

The Cabinet discussed the issue as part of the Education Amendment Bill, which focuses on the authorized grade system carried out by the State Examinations Commission. The government aims to prevent students and parents from influencing teachers for higher grades.

The government spokesperson said that, while the government had granted permission to withhold the results of the exams, students would face more severe consequences. Detailed information on the consequences of unauthorized grading will be published soon. If possible, steps will be taken to prevent the rank order of such students.

Leaving Cert students will this year have the option of receiving a calculated grade or a written exam in each subject. Students can receive calculated or accredited grades in all their subjects if needed. They will get grades at the same time as the exam results are published.

For those who opt for written examinations, orals and other practical coursework assessments will be conducted. However, some components may be difficult to complete due to public health reasons. According to the current government decision, the examination will start on June 9. The spokesman said the final decision would be subject to public health guidance.
