NMBI charge sheet against nurse who stole medicines from the care centre
Dublin: A NMBI investigation has found a psychiatric nurse guilty of stealing prescription forms, inhalers, and sleeping tablets from a care centre. Six such allegations were raised against the nurse. These allegations turned out to be true. The investigation report says that the nurse violated the model code of conduct and ethics with this bad act.
On May 3, 2017, a nurse smuggled prescription forms and medication from Clonmethan Lodge in Oldtown, Dublin, which operates the Centre Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues.
Ann Marie Duffy, chairperson of the committee, said the nurse had admitted committing the offences. The nurse also admitted to illegally obtaining 20 prescription forms and various sleeping pills. On May 3, 2017, the nurse presented the forged prescription at a pharmacy in Dublin’s Henry Street. In February 2020, the nurse was convicted of similar offences by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Later, resigned from work.
In November 2015, the person was assaulted by a resident of Clonmethan Lodge. Following that, the nurse revealed to the investigation team that the hypnotic drug addiction had worsened. Expert testimony was also provided to the team to confirm this. The nurse informed the investigation team that the person had stopped using drugs and wanted to continue working.
The committee determined that the nurse did not have a significant medical disability. The committee’s chairperson stated that the nurse had not used hypnotic medication in six years.
The person has been working as a nurse since 1991. The nurse said that family and relatives abandoned the person due to drug addiction. The person also expressed a strong desire to continue nursing. The chairperson said that the investigation report will be submitted to the board soon.
