Pope Francis Calls on Global Leaders to Prohibit Surrogacy, Deeming it Morally Reprehensible

In his New Year’s message to Vatican diplomatic representatives on Monday, Pope Francis urged world leaders to enact a worldwide ban on surrogacy, condemning the practice as morally objectionable. The Pope expressed concerns about the impact of surrogacy on the self-esteem of both the child and the woman carrying it, emphasising that it commodifies life and exploits the material conditions of the mother. He asserted that respect for life, starting with the unborn child, is integral to achieving global peace. Pope Francis underscored the need to prevent the use of children as tools for human trafficking, stating that babies are a divine gift and should never be treated as products of commercial agreements. The Pope expressed hope for international efforts to universally prohibit surrogacy.
