Social critic Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first American to receive the honour.

Lewis felt honored to be the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy awarded the honour on him in 1930 in recognition of the five excellent books he authored in the 1920s: Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith, Elmer Gantry, and Dodsworth. Lewis received the award from King Gustav of Sweden in Stockholm, and his second wife, Dorothy Thompson, accompanied him. During the award ceremony, Erik Karlfeldt, a poet and Academy secretary, gave a detailed overview of Lewis’ five main works. Karlfeldt praised Lewis for a variety of reasons, including his critique of American institutions and industry, his satire, and, of course, his writing style. Karlfeldt praised Lewis’s command of the language in the formation of Babbitt’s character.
