Virus spreads widely among young people in Ireland; nine deaths and 4,842 new cases confirmed today in Ireland

DUBLIN: The average age of COVID-19 patients in Ireland has dropped to 38, according to the Department of Health. Department sources warned that it is worrying that more young people are getting infected than older people.

However, the health department said there was a lower incidence of the virus today than in previous days. A total of 4,842 new cases and nine deaths were reported in the country today.

A total of 2,336 COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in Ireland so far with 140,727 confirmed cases.

Of the cases confirmed today, 2,304 are men and 2,528 are women. 61% are under 45 years of age.

1,049 cases were in Dublin, 530 in Cork and 514 in Waterford. 405 cases confirmed in Wexford, 247 in Louth and 2,097 in other counties.

There are currently 1,293 people hospitalised with COVID-19, including 119 in ICU. There were 102 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
