Dublin: Ireland is preparing for the arrival of Storm Austen, which is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and possible flooding. Orange rain warnings have been issued for six counties, including Dublin, with hazardous travel conditions and disruption to public transport expected overnight on Thursday and into Friday morning.
Met Éireann has also issued a nationwide yellow warning for rain and wind, cautioning that adverse weather could affect road travel, public transport and outdoor activities.
Orange rain warnings for six counties
The orange warning will apply to Cork, Kerry and Waterford from 10pm on Thursday, October 22, until 5am on Friday.
Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow will come under an orange warning from 2am until 8am on Friday.
Heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, difficult driving conditions and delays to bus and rail services. People travelling to work or school on Friday morning are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and remain alert to changing conditions.
Heavy rain and strong winds nationwide
A nationwide yellow warning for rain and wind will be in effect from 7pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday.
Rain, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected to spread eastwards across the country. Strong easterly winds will later turn north-westerly and intensify, with the strongest impacts likely in southern and south-eastern areas.
The adverse conditions could result in localised flooding, fallen trees and branches, and unsecured objects being blown about by strong gusts. Outdoor events may also be disrupted.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, particularly on roads prone to flooding, while people should avoid exposed areas where strong winds could create additional hazards.
Orange marine warning as winds strengthen
An orange marine warning has been issued for the sea area extending from Wicklow Head via Dungarvan to Valencia, as well as the Irish Sea south of Anglesey. The warning will remain in effect from 9pm on Thursday until 7am on Friday.
Winds are expected to reach Storm Force 10 at times, creating dangerous conditions at sea.
A small-craft warning has also been issued for all Irish coasts. Mariners and small-boat operators are advised to take the warnings seriously and avoid venturing out in hazardous conditions.
With heavy rain and strong winds forecast across much of the country, people are being urged to monitor official weather updates and take appropriate precautions ahead of the storm.
