Ireland Unveils Next-Generation Passport with New Design and Advanced Security Features

Dublin: Ireland has unveiled a redesigned next-generation passport, combining the country’s rich natural heritage, cultural identity and cutting-edge security technology. The new passport, the first major redesign since 2013, will begin being issued from Friday, June 26, 2026.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that existing passports will remain valid until their expiry date, meaning passport holders do not need to renew solely because of the new design.

Irish Wolfhound Becomes Centrepiece of New Design

The most distinctive feature of the new passport is the Irish Wolfhound, chosen as the central symbol following a global public consultation involving more than 15,000 participants. The iconic breed, closely associated with Ireland’s history and heritage, received overwhelming public support.

The redesigned passport also showcases Ireland’s native wildlife and flora, including the red squirrel, red deer, shamrock, gorse and bluebell, transforming the document into a celebration of the country’s natural environment and cultural heritage.

Enhanced Security with State-of-the-Art Technology

Beyond its new appearance, the passport incorporates the latest anti-counterfeiting and identity protection technologies.

The upgraded security features include:

• Advanced biometric security

• Enhanced holographic elements

• Next-generation printing technology

• New anti-forgery measures designed to combat identity fraud

The government officials say the document incorporates some of the world’s most advanced passport security technologies, further strengthening the integrity of the Irish passport.

A Showcase of Ireland’s Landscape and Heritage

The passport’s interior pages feature artwork inspired by Ireland’s diverse landscapes, changing seasons, wildlife and historic landmarks, reflecting the country’s identity while providing an enhanced visual experience for travellers.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee described the redesigned passport as both a technological achievement and a celebration of Irish culture.

“The new passport is a technical and cultural testament to Ireland’s pride,” she said.

The government believes the updated design will further enhance the international reputation and recognition of the Irish passport.

A Century of Irish Passport History

The Irish passport has evolved significantly since it was first introduced by the Irish Free State on April 3, 1924. The earliest passports featured handwritten personal details and a green cover embossed with the gold harp emblem.

Over the decades, the passport has undergone several major developments:

• 1985: Adoption of the European passport format.

• 1993: Introduction of machine-readable passports.

• 2006: Launch of the biometric e-passport.

• Later years: Introduction of the passport card.

Today, the Irish passport is widely regarded as one of the world’s most trusted and powerful travel documents.

Existing Passports Remain Valid

Authorities have reiterated that holders of current Irish passports do not need to replace them immediately. Existing passports will remain valid until their expiry date, and renewal will only be necessary when the passport expires or if a destination country requires additional passport validity for travel.

A century after becoming a symbol of Irish independence, the redesigned passport continues that legacy—combining the iconic harp, shamrock and Irish Wolfhound with world-leading security features to represent modern Ireland on the global stage.
