Military coup in Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi and President jailed; leaders should be released immediately; US and Australia warned

Naypyidaw: The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) representative said there was another military coup in Myanmar. Myanmar nationalist leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and other ruling party leaders have been jailed. Several provincial chief ministers have also been arrested. Telephone and internet connections were cut off in the capital.

The military coup comes as Myanmar’s newly elected parliamentarians take office today. This was the second general election since the end of military rule in 2011.

The election was on November 8. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won a landslide victory in the election. The UN had earlier warned the Kyi government to be wary of a coup threat by the Myanmar military, citing the election as unfit.

Myanmar’s current constitution is designed to keep Myanmar’s national leader Aung San Suu Kyi out of power and give her military positions. The president had earlier announced that he would amend the constitution to create a democratic federal state.

Win Mint is a leader who fought with Suu Kyi against military rule and was imprisoned during the 1988 democratic uprising. Although the president is constitutionally the head of state of Myanmar, Suu Kyi has been the real ruler of Myanmar since April 2016.

World against Myanmar army

The world, including the United States and Australia, intervened in the Myanmar military coup.

The US State Department and Australia’s State Department have criticized the military regime in Myanmar. The United States and Australia have demanded the immediate release of imprisoned former rulers and political leaders. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been directly involved for the United States. Mr. Blinken criticized the developments in Myanmar as very serious and terrifying.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne for Australia responded to the Myanmar issue. The army is once again in power. The military must first be prepared to respect the rules. Disputes should be resolved through negotiations. She called for the immediate release of all imprisoned political leaders. The army seized power yesterday. The state of emergency was declared after the detention of all current political leaders.
