US and Israel Signal Openness to Talks as Conflict With Iran Escalates

Washington: US President Donald Trump and Israeli officials have indicated a willingness to engage in talks with Iran’s new leadership, even as hostilities intensify across the region.

Speaking to The Atlantic, President Trump said Iran’s new leadership had expressed interest in dialogue. “They want to talk, and I’ve agreed to talk. So we’ll talk to them,” he was quoted as saying. However, there has been no official confirmation from Tehran that it is prepared to enter negotiations with Washington.

Rising Casualties and Escalating Strikes

The conflict has continued to escalate following a series of coordinated strikes. Iranian officials claimed that several US soldiers were killed in retaliatory attacks, while the United States confirmed the deaths of three service members — marking the first confirmed American casualties in the current phase of the conflict.

Simultaneous attacks carried out within a short span reportedly struck three locations approximately 1,000 miles (1,609 km) from Israel, resulting in dozens of fatalities, including senior Iranian figures.

The violence follows the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, an event that has dramatically reshaped the region’s political landscape. In response, US and Israeli forces launched extensive strikes across Iran, targeting ballistic missile facilities, naval assets, and key military infrastructure.

Iranian authorities have stated that more than 200 people have been killed since the wave of attacks began.

Regional Fallout

Iran retaliated with missile strikes on Israel and Gulf Arab states. Israeli emergency services reported casualties following an attack in Beit Shemesh, with fatalities and injuries confirmed. Authorities also reported several individuals missing in the aftermath.

President Trump, in a video message posted on social media, vowed retaliation for the deaths of US personnel and warned of further action if hostilities continue. Israel has also declared an open-ended offensive, with military officials confirming large-scale aerial operations targeting Tehran and other strategic sites.

US defence sources indicated that B-2 stealth bombers were deployed in strikes on Iranian missile facilities. Additional damage to Iranian naval infrastructure has also been reported.

Britain, France and Germany issued a joint statement expressing concern over the escalation and reaffirmed their readiness to work with the United States to prevent further destabilisation in the region.

Leadership Vacuum and Political Transition

The assassination of Khamenei — who led Iran for more than three decades — has created a significant leadership vacuum. Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga announced that a transitional leadership council has begun operating, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a new Supreme Leader is expected to be appointed within days.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned that the United States and Israel had “crossed a red line” and would face consequences. President Trump responded with a stern warning against further escalation.

Tehran has accused Washington and Tel Aviv of initiating the war, with Iranian officials urging Gulf nations to pressure both countries to halt military operations.
