A three-member Indian family absconded mandatory hotel quarantine; efforts to find the three are ongoing
DUBLIN: A three-member Indian family absconded mandatory hotel quarantine. Gardai have revealed that the Indian family who fled the hotel in Dublin 15 on Monday have yet to be found.
It is not clear where they came from, how many days they stayed at the hotel, or where they escaped. However, Gardai confirmed that efforts to locate the three are ongoing, and that an investigation is underway in collaboration with the State Liaison Officer.
Fianna Fail Cllr for the Castleknock area Howard Mahony, said a case should be lodged against them for breaching the COVID-19 rules.
“What I would say is there are terms and conditions when you enter the state at the moment. And people agree to abide by those when they enter and it’s really disappointing that this has happened again. Like other instances of COVID regulations, they should be brought before the courts and I won’t apologise for it,” Howard Mahony said.
“I understand that people are frustrated by it and I get that. But we’re just coming out of level 5 at the moment and from our perspective we are on an up, vaccinations are increasing. I think most have made an effort in a very tough year – so those regulations are there for a reason but I’m disappointed that people are not respecting it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Fine Gael Cllr Ted Leddy said in support of Fianna Fail Cllr: “t’s disappointing it happened. We’re not clear of COVID yet and breaching mandatory quarantine – mandatory is the word – it has to be done. And there has to be consequences for breaching mandatory quarantine.”
Mandatory hotel quarantine in Ireland was introduced in early April as an extra measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Several people absconded quarantine, but most were found and sent back to their hotels. Several challenges have also been also raised against mandatory hotel quarantine in the High Court.
Travellers arriving from high-risk countries must stay in designated hotels for 14 days at their own expense, as required by law. Any violation is punishable by a fine of up to €2,000 and a month in prison.
