Air India hit by massive cyber-attack; about 45 lakh passengers’ details leaked
NEW DELHI: Air India has been hit by a massive cyber-attack in which ten years’ worth of customer data including credit cards, passports and phone numbers, has been leaked. The national carrier said that the data breach has affected around 45 lakh customers who registered between August 26th, 2011 and February 3rd, 2021.
The data leak that occurred three months ago is now being revealed. The cyber-attack also compromised names, date of birth, contact information, ticket information, Star Alliance and Air India frequent flyer data. However, the company claims that no passwords data were affected.
In a statement the flag carrier airline of India said that SITA PSS, the airlines’ data processor of the passenger service system responsible for storing and processing of personal details of passengers, was recently subjected to a cyber-security attack.
Air India said the credit card details were leaked but the CVV / CVC numbers on the cards were not stored in the data processor and were not involved in the attack.
This is the second major data breach involving an airline in the last six months. Some of Indigo’s servers were hacked last December.
Meanwhile, Air India said it had launched an investigation into the incident. The company said that measures were taken to protect the compromised servers, communicate with external specialists of data security incidents, inform and contact credit card issuers, and reset the passwords of the Air India FFP program.
“While we and our data processor continue to take remedial actions…We would also encourage passengers to change passwords wherever applicable to ensure safety of their personal data,” it said.
