Use of AstraZeneca vaccine resumes in Ireland from today
DUBLIN: The National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) has approved the continuation of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Ireland after receiving a clean certificate from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Ireland had suspended the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine since last Sunday after it was found to have blood clots in four young people in Norway. However, NPHET said it had decided to continue with the AstraZeneca vaccine after the EMA clarified the matter. The HSE also said it would resume vaccination from today.
HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Colm Henry said the schedule could be restructured and vaccinations would continue as soon as possible. However, he added that the vaccine was included in the high-risk category.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn said that AstraZeneca is safe and effective. So far, 17,000 AstraZeneca vaccines have been administered in Ireland. Dr. Glynn said the NIAC has also made it clear that the vaccine can be given to anyone over the age of 18.
The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) also said the vaccine is safe. The HPRA also noted that the vaccine will now come with an information leaflet warning of possible rare side effects related to blood clotting.
