FSA advises people over 65 not to drink tea during meals

DUBLIN: The Food Safety Authority (FSA) has advised people over the age of 65 to drink tea only between meals and not during meals. This is because drinking tea while eating interferes with the absorption of iron and zinc.

The FSA’s chief specialist in Public Health Nutrition, Dr. Mary Flynn, emphasized the importance of iron and zinc nutrients in keeping people physically and mentally healthy.

Dr. Flynn also advised people over 65 to drink plenty of fluids, as this can impact how fibre works in the body. She suggested 1.6 liters of water per day for women and two liters per day for men.

She said people should not reduce their water intake if they are on medication such as diuretics. Dr Flynn also urged people over the age of 65 not to try crash diets.
