COVID-19: Eight deaths and 393 new cases confirmed yesterday

DUBLIN: The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has confirmed 393 new COVID-19 cases in Ireland yesterday. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 251,474.

The NPHET also confirmed that eight further deaths have been recorded in the country, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 4,921. The average age of the deceased was 79 and the age range was between 55 and 97.

Three of the deaths reported yesterday occurred in May, two in March, and three in February or earlier.

Of the cases confirmed yesterday,

● 175 were men and 211 were women

● 79% are under 45 years of age

● The median age is 28

● 173 of the new cases are in Dublin, 42 in Cork, 34 in Kildare, 26 in Donegal, 15 in Meath and the remaining 103 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

As of yesterday morning, 131 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised, with 36 in ICU.  

As of 4 May 1,655,866 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in Ireland. 1,201,373people received their first dose, and 454,493 received their second dose.     

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “The choices we make now are vital to minimise the incidence of Covid-19 throughout May and June. Prioritise being outside and avoid crowds. Know the symptoms – self-isolate immediately and phone your GP if you have them. By protecting yourself, you are protecting everyone you know from infection.”
