A big shout out to all nurses and healthcare workers on this International Nurses Week

Today, May 6, marks the beginning of International Nurses Week, an annual celebration honoring the contributions of nurses worldwide. The Nurses Week runs from May 6 to May 12 every year, and it is time for all of us to recognise and value their tireless efforts.

Nurses are the heart of the healthcare sector, and it’s our responsibility to thank them, as well as all other health care staff, for the hard work they do every day, even during this tough COVID-19 crisis.

The nurses are one of the frontline heroes who risk their lives every day to help combat the coronavirus pandemic. Even after a year of COVID-19 pandemic stress and long working hours, they are still serving on the frontline to save each of our lives.

Brief history of International Nurses Day

International Nurses Week is observed from May 6 to May 12, and International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12, in memory of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Florence Nightingale, a well-known British nurse, played a key role in the development of modern nursing.

The National Nurses Week was first observed in the US in October 1954 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s work during the Crimean War. Nightingale selflessly cared for injured soldiers, lowering the death rate from 42% to 2%.
