EU’s latest climate drive will make flying more expensive

DUBLIN: Criticism is mounting that the EU’s new green tax will ultimately be a burden on travellers. Airlines have issued a warning to the European Union about a significant increase in ticket prices.

Indications are that the EU’s latest climate drive will have a negative impact on people’s travel plans and family budgets in EU states who have planned holidays.

The European Union recently released 13 draft laws to meet its new goal of reducing pollution by 55% by 2030.

Airlines say the move to increase taxes on high-carbon fuels and find cleaner energy sources will increase costs, resulting in higher ticket prices.

However, the European Commission dismissed the criticism, claiming that the cost of flight tickets will rise by just 1% by 2030 and 8% by 2050. EU transport chief Adina Valean said the tax reform “is not something which will be overburdening for the customers”.

Airlines For Europe (A4E), which represents Ryanair, said the EU is making flying more expensive for travellers. “By making flying more expensive, it may shift demand globally and reduce traffic locally. But it will not tackle the source of the emissions,” said Thomas Reynaert, A4E managing director.
