Government to increase salary and benefits of local councillors; they will receive an additional €10,000 a year with new increase

DUBLIN: The government has decided to give a 50% pay hike to local councillors. The proposal to give councillors a pay increase of €8,000 in addition to their €17,359 salary was approved by the Government last night.

The Cabinet decided not to oppose a motion, which was brought before the Seanad by Senators Gerard Craughwell and Victor Boyhan, and set the stage for councilors to receive higher salaries.

In addition to the basic salary, councillors will receive allowances worth €5,335 and committee payments worth up to €6,000. They can also claim mobile phone bills, broadband, office costs, training and the infamous mileage for attending conferences. All of this will add another €10,000 a year to a councillor’s bank account with the new increase.

All councilors working at the local level will benefit from this. The majority of senators are elected from panels of councilors.
