Irish consumers face high electricity, gas and broadband rates

DUBLIN: Electricity, gas, and broadband prices are rising in Ireland. Bord Gáis will raise the average price of cooking gas by 12.7% and electricity prices by 11.6% on August 8. Eir has decided to increase broadband and phone prices by 8%.

Dave Kirwan, managing director of Bord Gáis Energy, said the rate hike is the result of a consistent increase in wholesale energy costs over the last six months.

“We have sought to mitigate this impact and have not taken this decision lightly but the wholesale pressures are a market challenge outside of our control,” he said.

Leading energy suppliers in the country, including Electric Ireland, Flogas, Pinergy, and Panda Power, have recently raised their prices.

Eir’s decision to raise broadband and phone prices by 8% will cost customers an extra €72 per year on average.

The company said the price hike was planned for 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. The price increase will take effect on September 1. Eir said the price hike would not affect new Gigabit Fibre Broadband users.

Prices higher than EU average

Eurostat figures show that electricity prices in Ireland are 23% higher than the European Union average. Ireland is the fourth most expensive country in the European Union in this regard. Ireland ranks seventh in the EU in terms of rising gas prices.

According to Eurostat, the price of communications in Ireland is already 40% higher than the EU average, said Daragh Cassidy, head of communications at Bonkers.ie.
