Leap card app for iOS users has been officially launched

DUBLIN: The Leap card app, which allows commuters to top up their travel cards using their phone’s NFC chip, has now been officially launched for iOS users.

Transport for Ireland’s (TFI) Leap Top-Up app now allows iPhone users to check their balance and top up their TFI Leap Card directly from their NFC (Near Field Communication)-enabled iPhone or iPad.

The TFI Leap Card, a contactless smart card for automated rate collection, was introduced in 2011 and an app for it was released in 2016, but it was only accessible to Android users.

However, the National Transport Authority has released a new Apple application so that iPhone users can take advantage of the convenient service from now on. But to use the Leap Card app, you need at least an iPhone 7 running iOS 13.0.

How to use? What are the features?

Users must open the app and place their TFI Leap Card on the back of their phone.

Anyone who has the app can check their balance or the current balance of any TFI Leap Card. They can top up their card at any time and from any location.

iPhone users who have downloaded the app can now collect pre-paid tickets (e.g. Bus Éireann TaxSaver tickets or tickets bought online from LeapCard.ie). Users can now view their last five transactions and receive receipts via email. They can also save their payment details.

Transport Minister said Leap Card and top-up app made travel convenient for everyone

“The TFI Leap Card along with the top-up app has made journeys across the TFI network more convenient for everyone. This additional feature for Apple device users will make public transport a more attractive option to people, said Minister for Transport.

“I look forward to seeing public transport users throughout the country availing of this hassle-free way of topping up their TFI Leap Card,” he added.

“It has always been our ambition to make the TFI Leap Card Top-Up App available to a wider cohort of public transport users. I am delighted that we are now in a position to expand this service to Apple devices,” Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, Anne Graham said.
