Moderna claims their COVID-19 vaccine is 94.5% effective; company is preparing to apply for an emergency approval

Washington: After Pfizer, the American biotechnology company Moderna also claims that their COVID-19 vaccine is effective.

The company’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine is 94.5% effective, Moderna said on Monday.

Moderna claims that the vaccine will defend against the COVID-19 on the basis of the interim review report of the third phase study.

In the coming weeks, the company is preparing to apply for urgent approval for the vaccine in the US and around the world.

Earlier, Pfizer’s vaccine was also claimed to be more than 90% effective. Meanwhile, there are reports that the US may issue emergency approvals for both vaccines in December.

The Moderna vaccine has been tested on 30,000 people in the US. Half were vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine. The rest were given dummy injections.

Of these, the company’s analysis is based on the first 95 people who exhibited COVID-19 symptoms. Only five people who were vaccinated were COVID positive. The company says the vaccine provides 94.5% protection.

Meanwhile, Moderna’s chief medical officer, Dr. Tal Zaks, told the BBC that the overall effectiveness of the vaccine was remarkable and great.

However, it is not clear how the vaccine works in the elderly. Tal Zaks only said that age does not affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Another feature of Moderna vaccine is that it does not require a strong refrigeration system to store the vaccine like Pfizer. The Moderna vaccine can be stored for up to 30 days at a standard refrigerator temperature of 2-8°C. Can be stored for up to six months at a temperature of -20°.

At the same time, the Pfizer vaccine can be stored for a long time only at -70° C. Pfizer vaccine has a shelf life of at least five days at standard refrigerator temperatures.
