Scotland became the first country to make sanitary products free

Edinburgh: Scotland makes free all sanitary products, including pads and tampons used by women during menstruation. The law was unanimously passed by the Scottish Parliament. With this, Scotland became the first country to make sanitary products free.

According to the law, sanitary products will be available free of charge in all public places, community centers, clubs and pharmacies. €8.7 million has been set aside for this initiative. Sanitary products will be provided free of cost in schools, colleges and universities.

Monica Lennon, a spokeswoman for the Scottish Labor Party, said the new decision would make a big difference in the lives of women and girls. In April 2019, it was Monica Lennon who introduced a bill in Parliament in this regard.

Monica points out that the way menstruation is being discussed in society has changed. She said there was no public discussion about menstruation until a few years ago.

Political parties and women’s organizations welcomed the new law. Studies have shown that girls face challenges in accessing sanitary products during menstruation. A 2017 survey found that one in ten girls in the UK does not have access to adequate sanitary facilities.
