Three “very unwell” pregnant women were in ICU with COVID complications – health expert reveals

DUBLIN: A leading obstetrician reveals that there were three pregnant women with COVID-19 complications in ICU last weekend.

Dr. Peter McKenna, clinical director of the HSE’s Women and Infants Health Programme, said that out of an average of 50 patients in the ICU in Ireland in the last few days, three were pregnant women. He added that all three were “very unwell”.

“Despite the fact that the numbers are falling [ICU numbers] we still have three pregnant women who are unwell, very unwell,” Dr. McKenna said.

Dr. McKenna also said that there were cases of women being transferred from maternity hospitals to general hospitals because of COVID-19.

He reminded that public health measures should be followed by all, especially pregnant women. He said it was up to the National Immunization Advisory Council (NIAC) to decide whether pregnant women should be prioritized for vaccination.
