Will India join Ireland’s COVID high-risk list? decision is known today

DUBLIN: India is likely to be included in Ireland’s “red list”. According to official sources, an unofficial move has begun to enforce mandatory hotel quarantine for those arriving from India, like other countries on the list. Ireland’s move comes in the wake of the threat posed by a new variant spreading across India. The UK and Northern Ireland recently added India to their “red list.”

An official announcement may be made today making India a “Category Two” high-risk country. The decision will be made after a meeting of senior public health officials today.

The deteriorating situation of COVID-19 in India has been under discussion around the world for the past few days. The deadly Indian COVID variant was detected in Ireland and the UK. Three such cases have been confirmed in Ireland. It was confirmed on Monday that the B1617 variant (Indian variant) have been confirmed in the Republic. Two of these cases are associated with travel.

The Travel Expert Group, formed in March in Ireland, is analyzing each country’s situation and advising the Chief Medical Officer on travel restrictions. The government will make the announcement after NPHET makes a recommendation to the health minister.

Eleven deaths and 390 COVID-19 cases were reported by the Department of Health in the Republic yesterday. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 244,297. The death toll from COVID-19 is 4,847.
