Dublin: Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan has announced that the government’s Garda recruitment campaign will commence in February, with a target of recruiting 5,000 new Gardaí by 2030. This ambitious plan aims to recruit 1,000 officers annually. However, a shortage of qualified applicants remains a significant challenge. To address this, the minister has urged members of the public from all backgrounds to consider joining the force.
Enhancing Training and Incentives
In an effort to attract more recruits, the government is considering increasing the Garda training allowance and establishing a new training college. Currently, the Garda training program consists of 33 weeks of instruction, including accommodation and meals, with trainees receiving an allowance of €305 per week.
Last year, a notable portion of applicants—one-third—were between the ages of 35 and 49. To further streamline operations, the minister emphasised that Gardaí will be prioritised for frontline duties rather than administrative roles, which will increasingly be handled by civilian employees. He also encouraged individuals working in cramped office environments and those with technical expertise to consider a career in the Gardaí.
Recruitment Challenges and Future Outlook
Speaking alongside Garda Commissioner Drew Harris at Irishtown Garda Station, Minister O’Callaghan acknowledged that reaching the 5,000-recruit target remains a substantial challenge. In 2023, only 631 candidates successfully qualified from the Garda Training College in Templemore, despite efforts to increase this number to 1,000. At the current pace, projections suggest that only 746 new recruits will be hired annually—falling short of the 800 officers needed to meet policing demands by 2030.
Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to bolstering Garda numbers through improved incentives and broader recruitment outreach.
