Dublin Grapples with Severe Disruption as Storm Debi Sweeps Through Ireland

Dublin: The impact of Storm Debi on Ireland has been profound, particularly felt in Dublin, with widespread disruptions to public transport, power outages affecting over one lakh homes, businesses, and farms, and a halt in flights and ferry services. The cyclone’s force has prompted government directives, instructing schools to consider a delayed opening after 10 o’clock pending favourable conditions, offering employees the option to work from home as needed, and allowing leave for those requiring it.

With schools unable to operate in the morning, parents are faced with challenges attending work, compounded by a virtual standstill in vehicular movement, except for essential staff vehicles and taxis.

Meteorological warnings underscore the potential danger, especially in Dublin, with forecasts of deadly winds reaching gusts of up to 130 km/h.The National Director of Fire and Emergency Management, Keith Leonhard, issued a stern caution, advising the public and motorists to steer clear of coastal areas due to the “extremely dangerous” conditions.

Yesterday, several counties, including Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Portlaoise, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, and Roscommon, were under an orange alert until 10 a.m., with a red alert in effect until 9 a.m., concluding at 1 p.m. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to monitor and respond to the evolving weather conditions.
