Old age at a young age; ‘Early Ageing’ getting increased in Ireland

Dublin: The number of ‘Early Ageing’ people is getting increased in Ireland. Premature ageing, also known as progeria is a state in which the body becomes old even at a young age.

Experts says that compared to the developed countries, in this regards Ireland’s performance is poor.  

In Ireland A total of 1222 people under the age of 65 are living in elderly nursing homes and a majority of these are physically challenged.

Their lives are miserable, people who come here temporarily are stuck here for the rest of their lives.

45-year-old Michael was bought in to a nursing home in Dublin, when he was 36. He was bought in because of speech impediment and mobility impairment.

For the past nine years Michael is stuck in the nursing home and he regrets for wasting nine years of his life.

He was living with his family in the North County Dublin before coming here, now he has no hope of getting out of here.

People like them came here as part of the Fair Dial Nursing Homes project. Some of them are like old people who suffers from Parkinson’s or dementia.

The HSE has said it will help those who want to go home on their own, but most of the time this won’t happen due to the lack of houses.

The lack of houses also makes these people’s life miserable, about 4,500 people with disabilities are on the social housing list.

There is a growing need for the government to take immediate action to raise proper funding and relocate the disabled living here to their homes.

Dr. Kathal Morgan, who is in charge of HSE’s Disability Services, said that the number of people who really need to stay in a nursing home will be released by October.

He also said that the goal of the HSE Disability Service is home-based personal care and government budgets should be redefined for this purpose.

The CEO of the Federation of Disabilities also said that the government take immediate action on this issue.

Senator John Dolan pointed out that those who have to spend a good time of their life in a nursing home for the elderly, will have a negative attitude towards life itself.
