Price Relief for Irish Consumers as Cost of Daily Necessities Declines..

Dublin: In Ireland, the cost of daily essentials and grocery items is experiencing a welcome decrease, as reported by Kantar, a global retail market analyst. Kantar reveals that grocery prices have reached their lowest point since August 2022, exhibiting a notable decline from 15.5% in January of the previous year to a more manageable 7.1%. This marks the eighth consecutive month of diminishing prices, with the trend anticipated to persist throughout the year, according to Kantar’s Emer Healy.

The analysis, based on the purchasing patterns of 5,000 households in Ireland, discloses that households collectively spent €1.4 billion on groceries last month. However, despite a notable 8% increase in the value of groceries, the average household spending rose by €42 compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 767 euros. Notably, personal purchases by households experienced a 5.3% decrease.

In December, shoppers made a staggering 42 million trips to stores, with December 22 and 23 emerging as the busiest days in the market. In terms of market share, Dunes stores claimed the top spot with 24.5%, closely followed by Tesco at 23.7% and Supervalu at 20.8%. Lidl’s sales witnessed a rise to 12.5%, while Aldi’s market share declined to 10.9%.

The report also highlights a shift in consumer preferences during the Christmas market, as mince pies saw a decrease of 9.3%, while sales of staple items such as potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and turkey increased by a substantial 20%.
