Death rate decreases, active cases increase; 147 new cases reported with the majority in Dublin

At the end of August 24, 2020 there have been a total number of 1,777 covid deaths and 28,116 cases in Ireland.

By the end of the day, there were 147 fresh cases, but no further death was registered. Out of these 14 cases are community transmitted and 60 was from close contacts or outbreaks.

There are 73 cases in Dublin, 17 in Kildare, 12 in Offaly, 11 in Wicklow, nine in Limerick and the remaining 25 cases are in Carlow, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Laois, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Tipperary and Wexford.

Acting chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn said that the cases are increased in the capital city, because majority of the cases were confirmed from Dublin. He warns the public about the chance of the virus spread, at the same time the officer doesn’t suggest any further measures or precautions.

“It is an opportunity for me to highlight in relation to Dublin that cases are increasing and that people should follow the public health advice if at all possible.” He said.

Dr Glynn also said that children have less chances to transmit the virus to others in schools.

“We all have a role to play in keeping this virus at low levels – this is key to protecting our education system over the coming weeks,” he said.

“We know that children can get multiple respiratory tract infections over the winter period and as a result could require repeated swab tests,” said Dr. Cillian DeGascun, Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory.

President of the Irish College of General Practitioners Dr. Mary Favier said that, parents should be vigilant, because it is them who are having direct and close contact with the children and also parents are the one who could closely observe children.

“Parents should also remain aware of asymptomatic transmission – like some adults, children may not present symptoms but can still carry the virus. If you have vulnerable people in your limited network, ensure physical distancing is adhered to and encourage regular hand washing habits with your child,” she added.
