“Housing Crisis Drives Dublin Staff Exodus, Research Finds”

Dublin: The housing crisis in Dublin is precipitating a concerning trend of workers and staff leaving the city, as highlighted in recent research findings. The Dublin Chamber’s Business Outlook survey reveals that a lack of accommodation and soaring costs are driving individuals away from the capital.

Shockingly, two-thirds of businesses in Dublin have experienced staff losses due to this housing predicament, with a significant percentage of potential employees opting to decline job offers in the city. To mitigate this issue, one-third of firms are offering temporary or subsidised accommodation for their staff, underscoring the critical importance of such support mechanisms in retaining employees.

The reliance on subsidised accommodation underscores the severity of the housing crisis, with many individuals facing dire circumstances as a result. Consequently, housing has emerged as a paramount election issue, with all 200 surveyed businesses emphasising its significance. Participants are calling for infrastructure development to be prioritised in the upcoming budget, recognising the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Aebhric McGibney, Director of Public and International Affairs, advocates for expanded government support to promote affordable housing. He stresses the importance of addressing building restrictions in certain parts of the Greater Dublin area, suggesting the removal of such limitations to facilitate the creation of more residential zones, particularly in areas with accessible public transport infrastructure.

Additionally, respondents in the survey advocate for remote working as an effective strategy to attract and retain employees amidst the housing crisis. This underscores the need for flexible work arrangements as part of broader efforts to address the challenges posed by housing affordability and availability in Dublin.
