Immigrants must leave Ireland; backlash and protests intensify…

Huge anti-immigrant rally in Dublin

Dublin: In recent times, Ireland has witnessed a concerning surge in illegal immigration, leading to a palpable escalation in anti-immigrant sentiment and protests. Tragically, legal immigrants and native Irish individuals often bear the brunt of this unrest.

The recent demonstration at the Garden of Remembrance in north Dublin drew significant attention, with organisers claiming a turnout of around 50,000 participants. Though the actual numbers were lower, the fervour of the protest was unmistakable. Regrettably, mainstream media outlets seemed to downplay the significance of this event, contrasting it with the coverage given to smaller demonstrations on other issues.

What distinguished this rally from previous ones was the proliferation of extreme slogans, including calls for the deportation of refugees. As participants marched through O’Connell Street and Custom House, chants of ‘Ole, ole, ole, ole’ reverberated alongside demands for illegal immigrants to vacate the city. The derogatory portrayal of Ireland as a “refugee plantation nursery” further underscored the inflammatory rhetoric of the protestors.

Various local groups, buoyed by recent protests in Coolock and Newtown Mount Kennedy, lent their support to the rally. Slogans such as “Ireland for the Irish” and “Irish civil rights” mingled with calls for mass deportations and criticism of political parties perceived as overly accommodating to refugees.

Representatives from far-right political parties, rallying under the banner of the National Party, were notably present, prompting a sizable Garda presence amid concerns of potential violence.

These anti-immigrant sentiments are gaining traction just as European elections loom in June, echoing similar sentiments across EU member states grappling with escalating refugee inflows. Notably, there has been a marked increase in asylum seekers in Ireland, with incidents of protests and arson targeting designated refugee centres.

Even as Dublin struggles with a shortage of accommodation, refugees continue to arrive, setting up tents along the Grand Canal. Accusations abound regarding the alleged encouragement of such encampments by Dublin Council and voluntary organisations.

The situation underscores the urgent need for constructive dialogue and proactive measures to address the complex challenges posed by immigration while upholding Ireland’s values of inclusivity and compassion.
