Ireland Records Third Best July for Wind Energy Generation with 656 Gigawatt-Hours, Report Reveals

Dublin: July was the third-highest month on record for wind generation in Ireland, with 656 gigawatt-hours of power produced, according to Wind Energy Ireland. Cork led with 80 GWh, followed by Kerry with 66 GWh, and Galway with 55 GWh, together contributing nearly one-third of the country’s wind energy.

Despite wind energy meeting 22% of demand, this was an 11% decrease compared to July of the previous year. Solar and other renewables accounted for 7% of electricity. The average wholesale electricity price in July was €110.94 per megawatt-hour, slightly up from the previous month.

Notably, electricity costs dropped 36% on days with high wind power but surged to €129.95 when relying on fossil fuels. Justin Moran, Director of External Affairs at Wind Energy Ireland, emphasised that increasing wind energy reduces dependence on expensive imported gas and helps alleviate high energy costs for Irish households. So far, wind farms have supplied 32% of Ireland’s electricity in 2024.
