Ireland’s Data Watchdog Launches GDPR Investigation into Google’s AI Model, PaLM2

Dublin: The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched a cross-border investigation into Google Ireland’s compliance with GDPR in developing its PaLM2 AI model. The inquiry will assess whether Google conducted the required Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) before processing personal data of EU/EEA residents.

Under Article 35 of GDPR, a DPIA is mandatory when processing new technologies likely to pose high risks to individuals’ rights. This forms part of the DPC’s broader efforts to regulate personal data use in AI systems.

Similar concerns have recently prompted actions against X (formerly Twitter) and Meta regarding data use for AI training.
