Terror Motive Investigated After Army Chaplain Stabbed at Galway Barracks; Teenager Arrested

Galway: Investigators are investigating a potential terror motive after arresting a teenage boy following a stabbing incident at Renmore Barracks in Galway. An army chaplain in his 50s, Fr. Paul Murphy, was seriously injured in the attack, which occurred around 10:45 p.m. Fr. Murphy is currently recovering at the University Hospital Galway after undergoing surgery.

The Special Detective Unit is involved in the investigation to determine if the attack was terrorism-related. The teenage suspect was restrained by Defence Forces personnel and later arrested by gardaí, with his detention period extended.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy commended the swift response by Defence Forces personnel, which they believe prevented further harm. Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin condemned the attack and praised the Defence Forces for their prompt intervention. Local residents expressed shock at the incident, describing the area as typically quiet and peaceful.

The scene at Renmore Barracks has been preserved for a technical examination, and investigations are ongoing. Minister for Justice Helen McEntee extended her well wishes to Fr. Murphy and praised the Defence Forces’ bravery in handling the situation, while refraining from further comment due to the ongoing investigation.
