Ban on Private Vehicles on Dublin’s North and South Quays Takes Effect Today..

Dublin: A ban on private vehicles using sections of Dublin’s north and south quays begins today as part of Dublin City Council’s new transport plan. The first phase aims to reduce non-essential traffic through the city centre, with private cars and delivery vans now restricted from traveling through key routes during the day. The measures apply from 7am to 7pm daily but do not affect buses, taxis, or cyclists.

Retailers have expressed concerns about the impact on businesses, particularly given current economic challenges. Diageo, whose trucks frequently use these routes, is also concerned. However, the council insists the changes are necessary to create a low-traffic environment and that access for deliveries, car parks, and residents will be maintained.

Dublin City Council has assured that the impact will be closely monitored and adjustments made if necessary. The next phases of the plan, affecting traffic around Pearse Street and Gardiner Street, are expected next year. Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) has criticised the timing and lack of consultation, arguing that the changes could harm businesses during a fragile period for the retail sector.
