Pay Hike for Ireland’s Civil Servants Begins Today; Lidl beats the government on pay

DUBLIN: Commencing today, a pay increase for public sector workers in Ireland is being implemented. In accordance with Section 3.1 of the Agreement, the Pay Commission has conducted a review and set the annual basic salary increment.

For individuals employed in the public sector, this increment equates to a 1.5% raise, amounting to 750 euros. This increase in salary is complemented by a 1.5% uptick in overtime and premium hours for those within the public sector, including nurses.

This rise marks the final stage of the Building Momentum Pay Agreement, which is set to benefit workers starting today. Under the Building Momentum Agreement, all public sector employees in Ireland received a 7.5% salary increase by October 1, 2023.

The initial phase of the 3% increment was implemented in the summer of 2022, with its effective date retroactively set to February 2, 2022. The second phase, involving a 1% increase, took effect in October 2022. The third phase, comprising a 2% raise, has been reflected in employees’ paychecks since March 2023. The remaining 1.5% increase will take effect as of today.

Lidl Sets New Standard: Employees to Receive Living Wage Surpassing Government Minimum.

Lidl, the prominent Irish supermarket chain, is taking a noteworthy step by adopting the proposed living wage in Ireland starting on March 1, 2024. This decision is expected to positively impact approximately 2,000 Lidl employees.

Lidl is poised to become the pioneering Irish supermarket to implement the new Recommended Living Wage.

As confirmed by the Living Wage Technical Group, workers are now recommended to receive €14.80 per hour to keep pace with the escalating cost of living. While the Irish government had previously announced a minimum wage of €11.30 per hour effective from January 2023, Lidl’s decision to adopt the Living Wage stands out as a significant commitment to its workforce.

The Living Wage system is designed to adjust salaries in line with the rising cost of living, ensuring that workers are adequately compensated. Beginning next year, in alignment with the Irish government’s recent announcement, the minimum wage is set to undergo gradual increases, eventually aligning with the Living Wage for all workers in the coming years.
