Vaccine portal could be open to all adults by end of June – Varadkar

DUBLIN: Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that the vaccine portal could be open to all adults by the end of June. This does not mean that everyone over the age of 18 will have been vaccinated by then, but at least some adults will have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

However, Mr. Varadkar told a meeting of Fine Gael’s parliamentary party that this target could only be achieved if vaccine supplies increased. He mentioned the possibility of administering 350,000 to 400,000 doses per week in Ireland if supplies increased sufficiently.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said the government plans to set a timeline next week for when people of all ages in Ireland will receive their first dose of the vaccine.

Mr. Donnelly said a revised plan for the rollout of the vaccine would be brought to the cabinet next week. The plan will be based on NIAC’s updated recommendation on the use of AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson vaccines in people under the age of 50.

The Health Minister added that the government’s current goal is to ensure that 80% of Irish people receive at least one dose by the end of June. As of May 10, a total of 1,882,635 vaccine doses had been administered in Ireland, with 1.3 million people receiving their first dose and 506,052 receiving a second dose.
