Accommodation and Food Services Sector Sees Largest Employment Drop in June, CSO Reports

Dublin: The accommodation and food services sector experienced the largest drop in employment in June, decreasing by 1%, according to new CSO data. This decline comes amid reports of widespread closures in the industry, with the Restaurants Association of Ireland noting that 557 food businesses have shut down since the VAT rate increase last September, including 45 closures in July alone. Celebrity chef Dylan McGrath also recently closed two of his Dublin restaurants due to unsustainable conditions.

The education sector saw the next largest employment decrease, down 0.9%, while the biggest job growth occurred in administrative and support services (up 1.1%) and professional, scientific, and technical activities (up 0.9%). Overall, the employee index fell 0.1% in June but increased 2.1% year-on-year, with the steepest declines observed in the 15-19 and 20-24 age groups.
