“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.” – Jawaharlal Nehru. “Happy Independence Day”

India’s Independence Day on August 15 is a poignant reminder of the arduous and determined struggle for freedom from British rule, led by visionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Despite the vast reach of the British Empire, often described as “the empire on which the sun never sets,” it was the unwavering resolve and strategic brilliance of India’s liberation fighters that ultimately brought about the end of colonial domination. Their tireless efforts, born out of centuries of oppression, culminated in a hard-won victory that Nehru famously described as India’s “Tryst with Destiny.”

On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, raised the national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi, marking the dawn of a new era. This symbolic act has since become a cherished tradition, with each subsequent Prime Minister honouring the occasion by hoisting the national flag and delivering an address to the nation on Independence Day.
