Dr. George Leslie Thomas from Wexford is contesting the Irish Medical Council elections for the only vacancy on the Medical Council as the representative of GPs (General Practitioners).
Dr. George Leslie, a Thrissur (Kerala) native, has spent the past decade serving in County Wexford. He is well-known among Irish Indians and is involved in a number of socio-cultural organisations. He has travelled to various locations in Ireland and has successfully introduced Ireland to Indians through prominent media.
The Irish Government appointed Dr. George Leslie, the founder of the Irish Indo-Cultural Association, as Peace Commissioner last year.
On March 1, online voting for the Medical Council elections began. Online voting is open until noon on March 21.
Six members of the council, out of a total of 25, are directly elected by medical professionals. The rest are government representatives and experts.
Medical doctors in the Republic of Ireland are regulated by the Medical Council. The purpose of the Council is to protect the public by promoting and improving the highest standards of professional conduct, education, training, and competence among physicians.
21,000 doctors registered with the Medical Council will participate in the poll. Registered medical practitioners are also eligible to vote electronically via an email polling link.
The Irish Medical Council is the most important authority for immigrant doctors. This is the first time an Indian doctor has sought an opportunity to join the high-level committee that takes policy decisions, including registration and practise.
He earned his MBBS from Thrissur (Kerala) Medical College and a postgraduate diploma from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland. In recent years, he has served in India, Oman, and Ireland.
Dr. Leslie, who now works as a full-time general practitioner at Slaney Medical Center in Enniscorthy, is one of the best known and most popular doctors in the area.
